If you get real enjoyment from outdoor cooking and entertaining in your back yard then maybe you are considering installing an outdoor kitchen. After all, if you’re considering your next home improvement project nothing is going to make a bigger statement than an outdoor kitchen. If you have a smaller home but a growing family, for instance, the expenditure on an outdoor kitchen could be well worth it if you consider the additional living space an outdoor kitchen area can provide. There are also few projects that can add value to your overall house as quickly as an outdoor kitchen can – it truly is one of the best investments you can make in your home. If you are considering installing an outdoor kitchen then, just like any other construction project, it pays to effectively plan in advance. The very earliest stage of planning should be devoted to working out both the size of kitchen you have room to construct, and also the style of kitchen that you want. There are three main kitchen layouts to choose from: L-Shape This shape is particularly popular with people who are designing a kitchen for a smaller space. Probably more so than the other shapes, it provides an excellent hybrid of cooking area and entertaining areas. Another bonus of this shape is that as it includes a long section and 90 degree bend, they can be built so that they attach (or at least give the allusion of attaching) to preexisting walls or structures in your yard. Therefore if you are looking for a design that will bed seamlessly into your current yard, then the L shape could be the outdoor kitchen layout for you. The L Shape also has the ability to easily upscale from a basic to more complex kitchen. This makes it perfect for designing on a budget, as it is easy to upscale or scale back on designs to fit any budget. U-Shape The U-Shape outdoor kitchen layout is very much the opposite of the L-Shape as it lends itself much more to being a freestanding kitchen area. Therefore, where the L-Shape should be considered for designs that blend in, the U-Shape is perfect for designs that stand-alone and are a real attention-grabbing feature.
It should also be noted that the U-Shape is better for a kitchen with a heavy emphasis on cooking. If outdoor entertaining is more your thing this may not be the design for you, as the U-Shape takes up a lot if it’s footprint with cupboards, grill and worktops and may not leave much room for furniture or entertaining space. Island The final design can be considered something of a hybrid of the other two. The island design can be small enough to be incorporated within a small yard and not stand out. It can be simply a practical arrangement for a grill and an appliance or two. The island design in particular can be a great space saving design for truly small outdoor kitchens. On the other hand, if you are more interested in entertaining then it can be the centerpiece of a large-scale outdoor kitchen surrounded by excellent entertaining space if that is your requirement. The potential savings in counter top space can be re-invested as space for furniture and other aids to entertaining and just kicking back and enjoying the yard. These are of course merely broad templates and a good designer will work with you to help create the outdoor kitchen of your dreams! Looking for a beautiful outdoor kitchen or a living space?
