Some people entertain on outdoor decks. Decks can be fantastic spaces to hang out and enjoy the sun, host parties, or spend some time listening and connecting with nature.
Decks can be built onto the exterior doors of houses, around pools, or can be standalone structures. They can be built in a variety of shapes, sizes, materials and even colors. Depending on the size of the space, a deck can be built to cover a small space or the entire yard. We have had a client of ours completely cover every spot of their yard in decking, just to prevent cutting the grass!
Another excellent addition to a backyard living oasis is the addition of a pond or fountain.
When you use any sort of hardscaping in the design of your backyard space, you are adding unique touches that set your yard apart from the rest. Adding fountains and ponds creates water sounds that are not only pleasing to watch but soothing to listen to. Water features can sometimes mask outdoor sounds that are not exactly as pleasing to an outdoor living space, like traffic or business noises along the perimeter of your property line.
Water features, like waterfalls, are tranquil and relaxing to sit near and can turn a regular backyard into an escape. Ponds can be designed in a variety of shapes, heights and layouts. I have seen multi-layer ponds and I have seen ponds that cover imperfections in a property, and therefore, create an eyesore into something beautiful to look at.

Outdoor living spaces, as seen on popular home design TV shows, show beautifully designed properties that have gone through amazing transformations. Many don’t even look like the same space once a project is finished. The addition of an outdoor living space adds more overall living space to your home and can bring the indoors – outside – and can be just as comfortable as sitting in your indoor living room.
Spaces like this can be created on decks, patios or built up with stonework to make the space seem like an outdoor retreat from the world. Plush furniture and decorative accents can make a regular space feel like you walked into a spa or a resort and give you a welcoming feeling that you can visit and relax in every day. I have seen some of these spaces be built with fully-functional, working fireplaces and tall chimneys with glass-encased fireboxes.
If you aren’t willing to spend the additional coin on a tall chimney fireplace, you can add a fire pit or a terra cotta or raw-iron Chimney.
Flower boxes and gardens with built up retaining walls are excellent for grass cutting. When you are cutting and edging your lawn, if you have a retaining wall around your property to enclose your flowers, your beds will be safer from the shavings of blades of grass that fly in as you pass by. Retaining walls are also great for protecting the expensive materials that you lay IN the flowerbeds, as well. I have had homes, that didn’t have built up retaining walls, where we have spent money to add mulch.
Sadly, after a few rainstorms, the mulch washes away when improperly drained sections of the yard are not able to filter the water out fast enough. We could only shake our heads and wait until the storm passed and the water would recede, taking away a part of our mulch as it drained down the driveway. If you are a gardener, you might consider building up flower boxes and gardens to protect the plants you are growing in the soil. With properly built up boxes that have drains on the bottom, you can water the plants and not have to worry about mold or mildew from standing water beneath the soil inside the box.

Other outdoor living spaces have fully-operational kitchens. These kitchens can be as simple as a built-in grill inside a brick wall, to a high-end kitchen that can stand the weather, no matter what the temperature is outside. Kitchens that are made to withstand the outdoors are durable and stylish and can be designed to fit your unique needs. Tiki Bars are a common addition in outdoor living spaces and are a part of an outdoor kitchen, especially when consideration for wet bar features are added in.
In short, outdoor living spaces should reflect who YOU are and showcase your individual tastes. It shouldn’t matter where you live, but as long as you have a little space outdoors to call your own, you can turn that space from drab to fab with a few unique touches and some creative juice.
